KenyaUnlimited is moving

Over the next 48 hours we are moving KenyaUnlimited to what should be a more reliable service. While the move is taking place the website, KenyaUnlimited, will be unavailable. This change was not due to take place without warning but the service from our current webhost has become so unreliable that we have had to change our original plan to give a few days notice and have had to start the process immediately. We will be posting regular updates on the KenyaUnlimited Status page. Please check this status page for any updates. An RSS feed for this status page is available.

We appreciate your patience on this.

If you have any questions or comments please email us at: admin [@] kenyaunlimited.com

(Good) Manners maketh the person

A friend from Tanzania once told us about a time when on his first visit to Nairobi he went into a pub and ordered a beer. The waiter took a long while to come back to him and when he did, he came back with the pub manager. A discussion ensued before matters were resolved; however, at one point the manager had asked our friend to leave the pub.

What had happened was that our friend had asked for the beer in Kiswahili and had said: ‘Naomba beer baridi tafadhali’ (I would like a cold beer please). Adding ‘naomba’ to a sentence being the polite way of courteously requesting for something to be given or done in Kiswahili. The waiter, who obviously had never heard of such niceties, thought our Tanzanian friend was begging for a beer, gratis, as he understood ‘naomba’ to mean ‘beg’. So he told his boss there was a man in the bar begging for beer.

In my work as a KBW admin member, I, together with my fellow admin members, have the responsibility of dealing with requests from prospective members wanting to join the webring or bloggers who are already members and who have encountered a problem, among other tasks. I am pleased to say the majority of KBW bloggers are as polite as our Tanzanian friend and belong to the category that know and understand the correct use of ‘naomba’ when making a request.

There is a percentage, unfortunately, that is just plain rude. Examine some e-mails we have received below. Other than deleting the blog name or URL where necessary, the e-mails are exactly the way they are sent to us. No salutations, which may or not may be important. No please, no thank yous, which definitely are.

Send the text based or graphic link …

I have added the webring code to my blog, how long before I am added to the webring?

I did apply to have my blog [blog name deleted] added but I have no idea how to add the webring. Could you email me a step by step process?

Exactly what criteria do I need to fulfill appear on the members list. Also, how long does one have to be on the waiting list to get anywhere? How exclusive is this site? etc etc

Erm it would appear my link is no longer on the aggregator list, alaa.. have I become persona non grata? Lol..

Does someone have a list of MPs emal [sic] addresses?

Could I have a webring code?

For some reason, my last two posts aren’t showing up on the aggregator.

how do you log in if you have a blog?

Is there a reason my posts for today are not showing on the aggregator?

I need a webring for my new blog. I want to replace my previous blog [blog URL deleted] on the kenyaunlimited with my new one [blog URL deleted]

How can i join you

send me site ID

add me to your list

This last one is our current favourite and we have received at least 3 like these. It is to the credit of KBW admin members that we still respond politely to such e-mails and offer assistance. I know of many organisations where such e-mails would be sent to the back burner or worse, trashed.

As mentioned above, KBW bloggers on the whole are polite people and for every

add me to your list

e-mail we receive, we also receive e-mails like this one (and many others)

Thanks! You guys are super efficient. You should open a bank!

which not only make us smile but also make us feel the effort of administering the webring on a voluntary basis is worthwhile.
